'At this time, I was working mainly in the Art School studios, but becoming more interested in working outside. Some of the studio sculptures I produced were geometric relief forms that incorporated fibreglass casts of beach texture-not dissimilar to the shapes outlined by the string.'[AG, Penpont, 10/11/2003]

[One of those early reliefs still exists. AG gave it to a former tutor of his at Lancaster, Bill Sharp.]
