I was camping with a friend, Brian Mills, from college at Southport. On the beach, heavy rain had compacted the sand so it formed a crust. I started tunnelling into the side of one of the dunes and as I was digging, fell in. I crawled out and at the top was this little hole, which was so black, and that was the work. I smoothed round the edges with my thumb and made two holes. [AG, Penpont, 05/02/04] [Also referred to in Hand to Earth, 1991, p. 26; Time, 2000, p. 182]
