'Balanced rocks, Morecambe Bay, May 1978 is composed of fourteen flat stones perched one above the other in a (very) approximately spiral pattern, with wide spaces between them. Peat was used as well as stones: this could have openings pierced in it, or be carved into irregular, spiky shapes looking as if they were growing upwards from the ground. The idea of light seen beyond or through seems to be common to all these: at Morecambe he would work facing across the Bay, so that the Lake District Mountains could be seen through them across the sands. The openness of construction of the rock pieces especially adds to the sense of infinite space since again they seem to be defying gravity.
